    In 2000, the government in Singapore made biomedical research the fourth pillar of the city’s state economy, known as the National Biomedical Science Strategy. Then, in 2003, under the initiative, the country established Biopolis, which is a custom-built biomedical R&D hub. Over the next 20 years or so, billions of dollars were invested in the life sciences sector.

    Singapore has been recognized as the fifth smartest city on the planet and ranked first in Asia. This accolade reflects its state-of-the-art digital infrastructure, innovative urban planning, and efficient public services that set a benchmark for smart city initiatives.

    Singapore leads the way for Asia-Pacific in life sciences investments, with major deals such as Brunei Investment Agency’s acquisition of a 49% stake in Ho Bee Land’s Elementum, a life sciences complex in One-North for US$206m in 2024. Singapore is an attractive hub for multinational life sciences firms seeking R&D and corporate headquarters

    Working in our Tokyo office means setting yourself up at one of Asia's thriving hubs in the life science sector. Here are a few key reasons to join our Tokyo team.

    Tokyo stands at the forefront of Asia’s life sciences sector, hosting global pharma giants, cutting-edge biotech startups, and a wealth of medical research institutions—all driving transformative innovation.

    In July 2024, the government unveiled a five-year roadmap to boost drug development and reduce drug lag. Key targets include initiating clinical trials by 2026, launching at least 10 drug discovery startups by 2028, and developing 50 new pediatric drug plans within five years. Additionally, regulatory requirements will be eased to speed up drug approvals.

    Tokyo has consistently ranked high in global quality of life metrics, in particular in 2024 where they entered the top 10 (6th) in InterNations 2024 rankings. 

    Tokyo is renowned for their emphasis on long-term relationships regarding business culture. In Japan, partnerships between industry, government and academia have been nurtured over decades.
